Recipe: kawaii cookies

Baking cookies is something I do regularly with my kids. With just a few basic ingredients, you can make delicious shortbread cookies. The kids and I love it. And of course, we love eating the result even more. ;) Read on to make the recipe for shortbread cookies with kawaii faces.

Shortbread cookies, the recipe

To make shortbread cookies, you need the following ingredients:

  • 150 grams of butter
  • 100 grams of white caster sugar
  • 200 grams of flour
  • 1 egg yolk

The supplies:

  • a rolling pin
  • a round cookie cutter
  • a baking tray lined with baking paper

Preparing cookies

  1. Place all the ingredients in a mixing bowl and mix until smooth. You can do this with a food processor, but by hand works just as well. Make sure everything is thoroughly combined. When the dough is ready, cover the bowl with cling film and let it rest in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes.
  2. After 30 minutes, preheat the oven to 175°C (350°F). Dust the countertop with flour and roll out (a piece of) the dough to about 3 to 4 mm thick. Then use the round cookie cutter to cut out the cookies. Place the cookies on the baking sheet. Not too close together, as they will expand in the oven.
  3. When the oven is ready, place the baking sheet in the oven and bake the shortbread cookies for about 15 minutes. Depending on your oven, you may need to bake the cookies a little shorter or longer.
  4. Once the cookies are done, let them cool first. Place them on a wire rack, for example. I line a pizza plate with paper towels and place the cookies on it to cool. Any excess grease will be absorbed by the paper towels. Once the cookies have cooled, you can decorate them.

Decorating cookies

To decorate the cookies, I use Dr. Oetker Soft Topping and Dr. Oetker Decorating Pens. I think the chocolate colors and the pink of the Soft Topping complement each other beautifully. Although I find it easier to work with the decorating pens, the Soft Topping bag is too large and uncomfortable to hold. Perhaps it's just something I need to get used to.

You can decorate the cookies entirely to your liking. There are plenty of examples of kawaii faces online. I've experimented a few times, and the results are shown here. It's really fun to do, and the cookies are yummy! Luckily, you can't mess up the flavor of shortbread cookies. ;)
